International cooperation for Advanced Air Mobility from Den Helder

Advanced Air Mobility Den Helder is receiving a significant boost through a new international collaboration. Den Helder Airport has signed a Letter of Intent at the NASA Ames Research Center in California with DART – Drone, Aviation and Robotics Technology – and the Coast to Coast Foundation. The parties will work together on innovative and sustainable aviation solutions for the North Sea.

The collaboration focuses on the further development and application of Smart and Advanced Air Mobility. This includes electric regional air transport, unmanned aviation, integrated airspace management, and sustainable infrastructure. With the signing, the organizations express their intention to connect knowledge, networks, and practical experience from the Netherlands and the United States.

Advanced Air Mobility Den Helder supports offshore development

The North Sea is rapidly developing into one of the largest offshore energy systems in the world. The growth of wind energy and other activities at sea creates new challenges in terms of logistics, accessibility, safety, and sustainability.

New aviation technology can contribute to the safe, fast, and efficient transport of people, materials, and parts. Within the collaboration, attention is paid to, among other things, Electric Regional Air Mobility, also known as e-RAM, and to unmanned flights beyond the direct sight of the pilot. These flights are known as BVLOS operations.

In addition, the partners are working on integrated airspace management, charging infrastructure for electric aircraft, and the protection of critical infrastructure in the North Sea.

From innovation to practical application

Den Helder Airport offers a unique environment for testing and demonstrating new aviation solutions. The airport is located directly on the North Sea and has years of experience with complex offshore flights. As a result, innovations can be tested under realistic conditions before being deployed on a larger scale.

As an international testing ground for Advanced Air Mobility, Den Helder airport connects technology companies, governments, knowledge institutions, and operational parties. Collaboration with partners in California helps accelerate the step from technical development to actual application.

International recognition for Den Helder Airport

The signing at NASA Ames underscores the international recognition of Den Helder Airport in the field of unmanned aviation, electric flight, and integrated airspace solutions.

β€œThe North Sea presents a unique environment for the development of new aviation technologies. By collaborating internationally, we can translate innovations more quickly into safe and usable applications for the offshore sector.”

Den Helder Airport looks forward to further expanding the collaboration with DART and the Coast to Coast Foundation in the coming years. This will not only strengthen the position of the airport, but also that of the Den Helder region as a center for sustainable offshore aviation and technological innovation.
